  Overview

This adventure is typically structured as a technical 4-to-6 day guided expedition, requiring specialized gear, glacier experience, and excellent acclimatization. The tour begins and ends in Cusco, involving a high-elevation trek to the base camp (often near 4,800m), followed by the challenging summit push across snowfields and ice walls.

Climbing Ausangate is reserved for experienced mountaineers due to the harsh conditions, extreme altitude, and technical complexity. Success is rewarded with unparalleled panoramic views of the Vilcanota mountain range, vibrant turquoise lagoons, and an intimate connection with the remote, spiritual heartland of the Andes.

Climbing Ausangate Mountain FAQs

Here some frequently asked question about trekking and climbing

How difficult is the Ausangate climb and what is its technical rating?

The climb is rated as Very Challenging or Formidable, involving alpine mountaineering. It is typically rated as PD+ / AD- on the French Mountaineering scale. Challenges include crevassed glaciers, a steep snow/ice wall (up to 60°), and extreme cold/altitude.

Is prior mountaineering experience required to climb Ausangate?

Yes, prior experience is essential. Ausangate is not a peak for beginners. You must have extensive experience using technical gear such as crampons, ice axes, ropes, and managing glacier travel, including self-arrest and crevasse rescue techniques.

What is the maximum altitude reached on the climb?

The summit altitude is 6,384 meters (20,945 feet). The Moraine Camp, the last stop before the summit push, is usually established around 5,500 meters (18,040 feet).

How long does the climbing expedition typically take?

A standard climbing itinerary takes 5 to 6 days. This includes 1-2 days of trekking to Base Camp, a day to move to Moraine Camp, the main Summit Push day, and 1-2 days for the return journey to Cusco.

How long must I acclimatize before attempting the climb?

Acclimatization is mandatory. You should spend a minimum of 5 to 7 full days in the Cusco region before starting, completing several challenging hikes or summiting a lower peak to test your body's response to extreme altitude.

When is the best time of year to climb Ausangate?

The ideal time is during the dry season, from May to September. June and July offer the most stable weather but are also the coldest. Avoid the rainy season (November to March).

What kind of specialized gear is required?

Personal essential gear includes double, plastic mountaineering boots, a 4-layer clothing system including a heavy down jacket, a harness, helmet, snow goggles, and a sleeping bag rated to at least -15°C (5°F).

What are the major dangers on the normal route?

The primary dangers are Altitude Sickness (AMS, HAPE, HACE), **Glacier Hazards** (hidden crevasses), and technical exposure on the final approach and steep ice walls. Rapidly changing weather is also a major risk.

Which route is typically used to summit Ausangate?

Most guided tours use the Normal Route, which approaches from the south side. This is considered the least technically complex option but still requires significant glacier travel and navigating a steep ice pitch.

Should I choose a mountaineering guide or can I go independently?

You must hire a certified local guide and agency. Due to the glacier complexity, deep crevasses, and technical climbing required, attempting the summit independently is extremely dangerous. Guides should be certified by organizations like the AGMP.
