2-Day Rock Climbing in Cusco FAQs
Here some frequently asked question about trekking and climbing
What is the skill level required for this 2-Day Climbing Tour in Pitumarca?
This tour is generally designed for intermediate to advanced climbers due to the variable and high-altitude terrain in Pitumarca. Participants should have experience belaying and climbing multi-pitch routes, though easier routes can be adapted.
How high is the climbing area in Pitumarca, and is altitude sickness a concern?
Pitumarca is located at a significantly higher elevation than Cusco. The climbing sites can range from 3,800m to over 4,000m (12,500 to 13,100ft). Acclimatization is essential. We strongly recommend spending at least 3 days in Cusco before starting the tour.
What is the accommodation like on the first night near Pitumarca?
Accommodation is typically in a local hostal or a basic lodge in or near Pitumarca. While comfortable, it is usually simple and clean, focused on providing rest and warmth after a day of climbing. (Specify if you use tents/camping instead).
Is food provided, and what meals are included in the 2-day Cusco Climbing price?
Yes, all meals once the tour starts are typically included. This usually covers Day 1 Lunch and Dinner, and Day 2 Breakfast and Lunch. We cater to dietary restrictions (vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.) if notified in advance.
What climbing gear should I bring myself versus what you provide?
We provide all shared technical gear (ropes, quickdraws, protection, first aid kit). You must bring your personal gear including your own harness, helmet, climbing shoes, belay device, and chalk bag, for best fit and comfort.
How does the itinerary break down between Cusco and Pitumarca?
Day 1 generally focuses on climbing crags near Cusco (or the Sacred Valley) for warm-up and practice. Day 2 involves an early drive to the Pitumarca area for the main high-altitude climb before returning to Cusco late that evening.
What is the transportation like, given the remote location of Pitumarca?
We use private, comfortable transport (van or 4x4) for the entire 2 days. The drive to Pitumarca is scenic but takes a few hours, so we ensure the vehicles are safe and reliable for mountain travel.
What is the climbing style/rock type we will encounter?
Climbing near Cusco usually involves limestone or sandstone, offering sport routes. Pitumarca is known for its diverse rock faces, providing a mix of sport and sometimes traditional (trad) climbing opportunities on unique, high-quality rock.
Will there be opportunities to shower or charge electronics?
A hot shower is usually available at the hostal/lodge on the night of Day 1. However, remote areas may have limited access to reliable power, so we highly recommend bringing a portable power bank for your devices.
How much extra luggage can I bring, since it’s an overnight trip?
We ask participants to limit luggage to one large backpack (containing clothing, toiletries, and personal gear) that will fit comfortably in the transport vehicle alongside the climbing equipment. Day packs are used for climbing.
